Jacopo Tiepolo and the Statutum Novum: plan and elaboration of an updated, expanded, well-ordered restatement of statutory legislation in an official text. Order of the sources of law for judges: statutes, analogy (also in criminal matters), customs acknowledged by judges, equity in the secular, Venetian sense of balancing interests. Two sets of glosses to the text: Odofredian ones, comparing the Venetian rules with the Roman ones, and Venetian glosses with practical additions in view of application. Introduction of ecclesiastical inquisitorial tribunals in Venice, but with the addition of the secular magistrate of Savi all’Eresia, without whose presence trials are null and void and sentences are not executed by the secular arm.
