There are two well documented facts in US politics (and several other Western democracies): A simultaneous increase in polarization and campaign spending. This paper provides a new justification behind these two stylized facts presenting a tractable model of electoral competition that provides interesting comparative statics. For instance, the paper shows how recent changes in campaign management (e.g., big data, social media, etc.) could be among the drivers of polarization and spending.
